One would wonder, why the name T-shirt ? It’s the ‘T’ shape of its body & sleeves that contributed to the name. It was worn as an undergarment in the 19th century. Now, a medium for self-expression and advertising, with any imaginable combination of words, art and photographs on display. But do you ever wonder how it’s made ?
First things first! Before the fabric comes into play, a basic fitted pattern has to be fabricated i.e. ‘Sloper Pattern’. This acts as an outline to cut the fabric & can be manipulated to create different patterns as well. Once equipped with that, comes the next part. Handling the fabric is no easy job. Various fabric rolls have to be then arranged on a cutting table in a fashion, so as to form layers of running cloth. Once layered, it’s secured with clips & gets a generous spray of water to keep it in place. Now it’s ready to be marked
The sloper pattern, that was fabricated before-hand has to be then traced upon meticulously on the layered fabric. Ensuring the least amount of wastage, a crucial step, which ultimately adds to your profits. NEAT… isn’t it. Once marked, comes the fun yet challenging part- Cutting. A sharp blade cuts through the fabric swiftly, dividing the fabric into sleeves, arm holes, shoulder, neck, length, chest & back.
Finally, comes the most laborious & time consuming process of all, sewing together the cut-outs into a T-SHIRT !! Now to be fair, stitching a t-shirt is a long process on its own.
